UT Dallas CS Hosts 2023 Spring IEEE International Contest on Software Testing

The Computer Science Department at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), in conjunction with the Technical Committee of System and Software Assurance of the IEEE Reliability Society (RS) and the RS Dallas Chapter, organized a very successful International Contest on Software Testing on April 8, 2023. The contest was held in a hybrid mode where contestants in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area participated in person, and those from other geographic regions such as India, Brazil, China, Malaysia, and Austria joined online. There were more than 200 students from six different countries who registered/attended the contest. The following figures show the contest on the campus of UT Dallas.

The CS Department at UTD is one of the largest Computer Science Departments in the USA, with more than 6,000 students. It is also one of the few that offers BS, MS, and PhD in Software Engineering in addition to Computer Science degrees.

Students were required to watch a video and complete a practice test before attending the contest. During the contest, each contestant had to work independently to design a suite of test cases with specific input values based on the given source code to test multiple Java programs. The code coverage and mutation score achieved measured the generated test cases’ quality.

This contest was sponsored by MoocTest Inc., which provided the MoocTest online testing platform used for the contest. Argo Data, Katalon Inc., Zhonghui Group, etc., were also contest co-sponsors.

Mr. Mark Bentsen, a senior QA Manager from Argo Data, gave a talk on Performance Assurance after the contest while students were having lunch and waiting for the results.

Each of the top ten winners of the in-person session received a set of JBL Bluetooth Wireless Headphones. Because UTD policy does not allow students to receive cash directly from the contest, the top three students also received a gift valued at $150, $100, and $50, respectively. In addition, Katalon Corporation provided all the winners with a one-year free license for their testing tools. Winners for the online session were Leonardo Miyake (Brazil), Pedro Henrique Kuroishi (Brazil), Augusto dos Santos Gomes Vaz (Brazil), Vinita Balasaheb Ghotane (India), Hao Zhu (China), Jianpeng Tang (China), and Yichen Li (China).

A list of the past nineteen contests we have organized since 2016 can be found on our website. Except for those in 2020 to 2022, which were conducted online in a virtual mode due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all other contests were held in person at different locations, including USA, Brazil, Portugal, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, and China.
